Mechanical Engineer

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate openings for Mechanical Engineers located at Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville, NE

Summary of Job duties:

All of Engineering:

  • Develop effective working relationship with maintenance, operations, other engineering departments and project management as required to implement timely and cost effective solutions to plant issues.

  • Attend on-site and/or industry conferences & training to continue development of engineering fundamentals for application in the nuclear power industry.

  • Use and share operating experience from other plants and vendor to improve the reliability of the station.

Design Engineering Department:

  • Maintain the station's design bases utilizing the station's configuration control process and corrective action process.

  • Maintain the station's design bases by analyzing and implementing configuration changes to implement timely and cost effective solutions to stations problems.

  • Evaluate and implement solutions for assigned tasks to achieve continuous improvement in station performance and material conditions consistent with station safety, cost, and production goals.

  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve design engineering capabilities that will support department and station goals through improved equipment and station performance.

  • Challenge and effectively communicate ideas and knowledge to, and provide recommendations needed by the plant staff to maximize equipment and station performance.

System Engineering Department or Programs and Components Engineering Department:

  • Monitor and trend system/Component performance to maintain and improve availability, reliability, and operational performance. Investigate deteriorating performance to identify cause for declining trends and determine corrective actions necessary.

  • Perform periodic field walk-downs, conduct inspections of plant equipment and interface with other departments to resolve emergent and routine plant issues.

  • Be recognized as the system/component expert by maintaining knowledge of assigned equipment, status, and its associated Design and Licensing Bases.

  • Challenge and effectively communicate ideas and knowledge to, and provide recommendations needed by the plant staff to maximize equipment and station performance.

  • Review Preventive Maintenance strategies, Corrective Maintenance, Long-Range Plans, and Refuel Outage Work Scope for assigned system/component and provide recommendations that align with station goals and improving equipment reliability.


Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university or college.

Training and experience requirements fall under the umbrella of NPPD's Nuclear Engineering Career Path. Specific requirements for the various Engineer Levels are specified in the career path standard. Level of Engineer at time of hire will be dependent on experience.

Salary Information: $66,372 to $125,106 (depending on level of nuclear industry experience)

Nuclear Engineering Career Path has 5 levels of Engineers, salary is dependent on experience. Engineers are Exempt and salary ranges from Pay Grade 12 to 16
