Sub-Transmission & Distribution Operator II or I

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Sub-Transmission & Distribution Operator II or I located in Kearney.

Position closes January 17, 2018.

Summary of Job duties:  

This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of NPPD's jointly operated Sub-Transmission system (69kV and 34.5kV), and Distribution systems in the District's multi-substation system (includes system control, system security, operations, retail load optimization systems, Power On Outage Management System and SCADA system.) The incumbent will  coordinate personnel and system strategies for outages during both normal and emergency operations and take actions necessary to maintain a safe, reliable, and efficient system. The incumbent will be required to complete the requirements of the System Operator Progression Program. In addition, individuals in this position are expected to live within 30 minutes of the Kearney Control Center, in the event of a call-in.

This position will report to the Kearney Operator Team Leader.  

Essential Functions of Position:

Control switching of Sub-Transmission and Distribution lines and associated substation equipment in a manner that will not jeopardize the safety of personnel and equipment. Verify switching orders are correct prior to execution.

Monitor line and transformer loading to insure lines and equipment are operated within established limits and guidelines.

Monitor and control Distribution lines and substations to react to changes in system requirements due to variations in system load conditions and other factors. This includes response to emergency conditions such as loss of transmission, sub-transmission, distribution lines, and/or substation facilities. Remain abreast of the status of the high voltage transmission system (NPPD and neighboring systems) that impacts the Sub-Transmission and Distribution systems.

Continuously monitor voltage and loading on NPPD's Sub-Transmission and Distribution systems as well as those of the Joint Sub-Transmission members.

Evaluate and respond to unplanned outages on the joint sub-transmission systems and NPPD's distribution systems utilizing the District's outage management,(PowerOn), system and the Distribution SCADA system,(ACS).

Verify switching drawings, DAS map drawings, and one lines used by the Control Center are updated and accurate.

Remain abreast of the status of the District's distribution load control function and settings.

Incumbent is accountable for miscellaneous other responsibilities as assigned or required.

Qualifications:

Education, Training, and Experience:

Incumbent must be recommended based on the System Operator/Power Dispatching II (SO/PD II) test results.

Apprentice Operator - Technical School Degree in a related field (OR) High School Diploma/GED plus 3 years related experience as indicated below.

System Operator II - Technical School Degree in a related field (OR) High School Diploma/GED plus 3 years related experience as indicated below.

System Operator I - Associate's degree in electrical or electronics technology or Technical School degree in a related field plus 3 years related experience as indicated below (OR) High School Diploma/GED plus 7 years related experience as indicated below.

Licenses and/or Certifications Required/Preferred:

Apprentice Operator - Entry level position; incumbent responsible for meeting probationary requirements within NPPD's Sub-transmission & Distribution System Control Operator progression program.

Establish and maintain acceptable NERC Security Background check.

System Operator II - Must meet the requirements of the Sub-transmission & Distribution System Control Operator progression program. Successful completion of NPPD's Sub-transmission & Distribution System Control Operator II written exam and oral review board within 12 months.

Must have NPPD certifications (Switch person & Clearance holder).

Establish and maintain acceptable NERC Security Background check.

System Operator I - Minimum of 2 years' experience as System Control Operator II. Successful completion of NPPD's Sub-transmission & Distribution System Control Operator I written exam and oral review board.

Must meet the requirements for experienced personnel defined by the Sub-transmission & Distribution System Control Operator progression program to be hired as an Operator I. Must complete the requirements of an Operator I within the prescribed timeline identified in the progression program.

Must have NPPD certifications (Switch person & Clearance holder).

Establish and maintain acceptable NERC Security Background check.

Salary Information:

Apprentice Operator/Operator II: non-exempt pay grade 12 $31.20 - $39.40/hour

Operator I: non-exempt pay grade 13 $34.99 - $44.19/hour
