Environmental Restoration Specialist

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for an Environmental Restoration Specialist. Location is negotiable.

Position closes September 25, 2017.

This position reports to the Corporate Environmental Manager.

Summary of Job Duties   

Incumbent is a technical subject matter expert who works independently to provide high quality, cost-effective, and science-based restoration, fire prevention, and habitat improvement programs for NPPD’s transmission line right-of-way and other NPPD properties. The Environmental Restoration Specialist works with the general public and agency experts to determine the appropriate restoration methods to properly restore the transmission line right-of-way and other NPPD properties to preconstruction/pre-maintenance condition. This includes participating in the selection/procurement process for contractors, complete oversight of the contractor’s work, and inspections of the contractor’s work.

  • Develop, administer, and manage a science-based restoration, fire prevention, and habitat improvement program for   NPPD’s transmission line right-of-way and other NPPD properties. Develop and manage a cohesive restoration program to restore native landscapes to preserve ecosystem benefits. Provide technical support in planning, designing, implementing and monitoring activities for the restoration, improvement, or acquisition of disturbed or degraded natural resources within all of NPPD’s transmission system and other NPPD properties.
  • Coordinate and partner with research institutions to develop and enhance ecological assessments and information related to the local ecosystem. Maintain an active interface with other departments within Operations, Customer Services, and other affected Business Units to assure criteria and objectives are met.
  • Assist with environmental reviews required by the National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Special Act, and other relevant statutes. Incumbent will perform the same assigned environmental duties as an Environmental Specialist or Environmental Coordinator.  
  • Use GIS tools to assess short and long term impacts of management activities and disturbance factors on NPPD tansmission line right-of-way. Implement and maintain an ‘Action Tracking System’ for Environmental Restoration Programs and clear measurement of success criteria.
  • Pursue partnerships actively, works extensively with the general public and agencies, and requires considerable independent judgment and initiative following established guidelines and procedures.
  • Provide work direction, oversight, coordination to contractors, consultants, NPPD personnel and others in performance of projects and maintenance activities. Make recommendations for replacement of contractors, if needed.


  • Education, Training, and Experience:

    Bachelor’s Degree in Ecology, Biology, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Sciences or related field and five years’ experience designing restoration projects for riparian habitats, sage brush communities, rangeland, native grasslands, and/or wildlife habitat.

    Other Experience:

    Experience using common software applications such as Microsoft Office, web browsers, etc. - Preferred 

    Experience in sandhills rangeland restoration and management - Preferred

    Experience in written and verbal communication of technical information - Preferred

    Experience leading teams - Preferred

  • Licenses and/or Certifications Required/Preferred:
  • Valid Nebraska Driver’s License
  • Nebraska Pesticide Applicator License


Salary Information: Pay grade 14, $82,752.00 to $106,547.00   Exempt
